The Coronavirus outbreak is out of control lately and people are forced to quarantine. While this is hard for those who rarely stay isolated for too long, it’s rather not that hard for introverts out there.
I was inspired to create this post from YouTuber Oh no Nina (and her comment section, let’s not forget!). You can check out her video “10 things to do when you’re stuck at home”.
However, before we actually get into the post, you must understand what Coronavirus is and how you can stay safe.
What is Coronavirus
Also, know as “COVID-19”, the virus causes respiratory illness and can spread from one person to another. This illness was discovered from Wuhan, China, in animals (such as bats and snakes).
Common signs and symptoms of the COVID-19
- fever (runny nose, sneezing), coughing, and breathing difficulties
- In severe cases for older people (due to a weak immune system), it can cause pneumonia, kidney failure, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and death.
How to protect yourself
- if you’re going to cough or sneeze, make sure to cover using your arm/elbow
- after sneezing or coughing, immediately throw the tissue into the trash bin
- wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water
- have a clean environment.
What to do if you caught it?
- stay isolated at home for 7-14 days
- DO NOT go outside as of any means unless you are appointed to go to the doctors. When you do, have a mask on.
Now that you understand the Coronavirus and how to keep yourself from getting infected, let’s get right onto the list of things to do during the quarantine.
So grab your mug of coffee or tea and let’s get right into it!
Things To Do during Quarantine…
Watch a movie or binge watch tv show
You can watch movies and tv shows on Netflix or Hulu. You can also binge-watch videos through YouTube playlists. I guess this is one of the most popular things every does nowadays when it comes to solitude.
However, you do have to pay a monthly subscription to watch them. They have 3 to choose from: standard, HD, Ultra HD. You can buy a $20 Netflix gift card that will give you 2 months (which I did).

But if you prefer something free, there’s always YouTube. Even though there are some contents that people dislike, there is always something there for everyone. These categories include beauty, music, documentaries, art, vlogging, drama, news, comedy, food, cooking, DIY, home interior, science, gaming, mechanics, tech, and so many more.
When I watch a YouTube playlist or binge watch a few Netflix movies, I don’t realise that time flies by so fast! While you put your playlist on in the background, why don’t you multitask by organising your room?
Organise and clean your environment
Since you’re going to be staying inside a lot during the quarantine, why don’t you declutter your room or environment? Part of the quarantine is to stay tidy and clean while trying to avoid getting infected by the coronavirus.
You can start tidying your desk, adding a few new aesthetically pleasing items and cleaning out your closet. Vacuum the floor and redo your bed. Throw out things that you would never use. Throw out any house plants that died, dust off any dirt in cluttered areas of your room.

If your room is tidy, you can also help out with the household by decluttering other areas in your house like the kitchen, living room, bathroom, etc.
After you’ve completed cleaning out your environment, you might have discovered a book that you never finished.
Read a book
Even if you don’t like reading books, you can also listen to audiobooks or podcasts. There are plenty of them on the internet. You can simply just light up a few candles or put on a diffuser, sit in your little corner and read or listen.
The book I’m currently reading at the moment is “The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F***” by Mark Manson. It’s a good personal development book if you’re interested in improving yourself and your mindset.
Update Sep 2020: I’ve completed reading this book and I must admit, I actually recommend it. It’s life-changing!
You can also find helpful personal development books at SimpleTruths. They offer different books, videos, quotes, and many more.
But if you prefer to learn something interactive and visual instead of reading, you can try doing an online course.
This would be a perfect time for you to start learning a new skill that you always wanted to learn but didn’t have the time to.
Have you always wanted to learn the skills in business, art, crafts, IT, design, personal development, photography, or marketing? There are millions of courses out there. You also get a certificate once you completed your courses (which is useful to add to your resume).
You can also improve on your current skills such as English, maths, history, science or languages.
While you have a bunch of courses in your playlist, it’s time to plan them out into your planner from what skill is important to unimportant.
Planning is a wonderful way to keep yourself busy throughout your quarantine. You can plan out the week in your physical planner or digital planner.
The physical planner I absolutely recommend is the Erin Condren planner. If you haven’t checked out my review on the LifePlanner, check it out here. It’s like a personalised plan for you to carry around. Personally, for me, I love to wake up every day to it because it just gets me excited to use it.
You can also be creative with planning by making a bullet journal. There are tons of helpful ideas online (YouTube, Google) for creating one. You can add things such as little objects like photos, a feather, stickers that share a memory. You can also add in little doodles or drawings, your list of goals for the year, and even practice your calligraphy.
For digital planners, I use Google calendar to schedule my social media, blog, uni classes, and other events. You can also have your digital planner both sync in your desktop and phone at the same time.
Include more things to your planner by finding a new hobby.
Learn something new (like a hobby)
This could be learning a new language like French, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, etc. There are plenty of resources online for you to learn a new language. This includes language sites, online courses, YouTube videos, and apps like Duolingo, HelloTalk, Babbel and more.
While learning a new language, it would be helpful to input what you learned through conversations or watching tv shows involving that language. For me, I love to learn Korean, so listening to K-pop, watching K-dramas and Korean mukbangs on YouTube really helps a lot in improving vocab and grammar.
On the other hand, you can learn how to play a new instrument. This could be the violin, drums, keyboard, piano, guitar, singing, flute, etc. In year 7, I learned how to play the drums however I ended quitting after that. Now I seriously want to learn how to play the piano.

Since you’re learning a new hobby, it’s best to balance it with tasks you need to prioritise.
Do “catch-up” work
If you’re in school you could work on your homework. Since many schools are closing and going online during the Coronavirus case, you could start by working on it… even if you don’t want to.
For university or college students, you could also work on your assignments or projects and even study for an exam. For my Psychology course, I have tons of assignments to work on and lots of things to memorise before the test. It’s best to start studying for these as your future self will thank you for it.

If you’re not a student or your workplace closed due to the COVID-19, you can start a hustle online.
Use your skills and earn online
Have a skill you want to offer in exchange for money? Even though workplaces close down, you can still make money working from home or remote jobs. There are plenty of freelancing sites out there including Fiverr, UpWork, Freelancer, FlexJobs, Indeed, Guru, Seek, Airtasker and much more.

As I mentioned in my previous tip, you can start your own blog. You can write about pretty much anything with a blog such as your interest in a certain niche, sharing cool recipes, writing about your thoughts and feelings, or share your daily experience.
Sadly travelling niches has dropped due to the COVID-19 and airports limiting travelling to outside countries. You can read more about it in Niel Patels’ post. I also have a few posts on blogging if you want to start a new blog…

You can write a story. As cringe as this may sound, you can actually write Fanfictions and post your stories online such as Fanfiction.com, Archive of Our Own, and Wattpad. I use to read a lot of Wattpad back in high school because that is literally the only reading site that wasn’t blocked on my school’s internet.
Whether you’re good or bad at writing, you can always count on journals. Write anything and everything you want in your journal and you wouldn’t have to worry about bad grammar or someone reading your deepest secrets. You can use a free app called SimpleNotes to write your journals or have a physical journal with you.
Even though you can write your thoughts and feelings about the coronavirus, it’s best to communicate it with someone close to you about your concerns.
Communicate with loved ones
Thank god for social media and technology, right? Even though there are bad things about SM and tech, there are certainly good things about it. You can start by face timing, texting or calling your friends.
I have friends in different countries that also suffer from the coronavirus movement (I guess something we can relate to other than video games haha). We would discuss our concerns and in the end, feel much better knowing that there’s someone to listen to.
You can also have fun with your friends through voice-chat in multiplayer online video games.
You got your friends and family there but what about yourself?
In distressful situations like these, it’s best to focus on your own health and wellbeing. You can start by putting on a facemask, meditating, listening to music, lighting up candles or diffusers, taking your vitamins, and jumping into a warm bath.

Although self-care is beneficial, it’s also important to move your muscles around.
Do yoga or exercise
Many GYMs are closing due to the outbreak. However, that can’t stop you from getting fit. There are a lot of apps to do yoga and exercise right at home.
If you have GYM equipment/s at home, that’s awesome! But while others don’t have access to that equipment, they can still get other access to a wide range of fitness through apps and videos.
I want to share with exercise and yoga apps (both IOS or Android) that I found on Ozbargain. You can use Down Dog apps for free until April 1st. The team is dedicated to its users due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Although you may find exercising quite boring, you can always uplift your mood through music and dance.
Play music and dance!
There are tons of awesome playlist on Spotify and YouTube. Put them on, turn them up and dance around in your room. This is a good alternative to exercising yet you’re having fun and learning cool new dance moves!

Want to do something quiet instead? Why not try out art, crafts and DIYs?
Art, craft and DIY
Art helps with expressing your inner creative side. A few art things I recommend are painting, digital art (if you have a tablet), watercolour art, colouring-in pages, sketching, illustration, oil painting, ceramics, graphic design, sculpture using clay, mosaic, or creating videos.
If you’re into crafts and DIYs, you can create décor for your home with the stuff you can find in your house. You can also create DIYs for your garden or organisational crafts for keeping your home tidy.
You can also learn how to knit or crochet. This is a great way to have something to do while you’re creating something from your heart.
But while you create crafts and art, you must be somewhat hungry.
Cook or bake
With so much people panic buying groceries and toilet paper, it’s tough to find food in stock. However, if possible, you can try cooking your favourite recipe at home- if you have enough ingredients in your cupboard.
On the other hand, if you’re an amateur cook or even with the basic ingredients you have left, there are tons of recipes (easy ones) online that you can check out. Here are some of my favourite sites to look for recipes (Aussie):
If you’re more into the sweet stuff you can try baking. With the links I mentioned, you can also make a cake, bake bread, make cupcakes, croissants and so much more.
But, if you’re someone who doesn’t like getting messy in the kitchen, you can gain entertainment from video games.
Play video games
You don’t have to order a new PS4 or XBOX to play video games. You can absolutely download app games on your phone or download video games on your pc.
Update Sep 2020: I took the courage to buy a Nintendo Switch and I absolutely recommend it (the best decision I have made in my life!). I recommend Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Pokemon Shield or Sword and The Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
I love playing PC games while isolating. Suggested games include League of Legends, GTA V, Fortnite, Apex Legends and CSGO.
After your entertainment, you may get a little tired.
Take a nap
Catch up on sleep if you’ve missed any. Naps are a great way to regenerate the energy you used up. If you have trouble falling asleep, check out this post on insomnia.
But if you still can’t fall asleep or you don’t want to nap, you can always try experimenting with makeup.
Experiment with new makeup looks or hairstyles
There are tons of makeup tutorials on YouTube and even quick beauty videos on Instagram. My favourite beauty influencers are Michelle Phan, Jeffree Star, NikkieTutorials, Danielle Mansutti, Pony, and Christen Dominique. There are so many out there, just search up “makeup tutorials” and you’ll find over a million videos.
Next up after finding your new looks, find a matching outfit.
Create New Outfits
If you have a bunch of clothes in your closet that you never wear, try mixing it up by matching clothes (like in Clueless).
You can always have your own little fashion runway in your room or take selfies in your new OOTD. This is also a great way to donate clothes that are too small or that you never wear anymore.
After you’ve completed your whole entire look, it’s time to celebrate it with your pets.
Spend time with your pets
Last, on this list, spend quality time with your pets.
Whether that be your pet dog, cat, birds, fishes, or zebras, there’s a good deal that spending this time will them will help boost your mood.
